La World Brain Awareness Week 2012 a Barcelona

Programme Neurociència

Once more this year, Barcelona participates in World Brain Awareness Week through a special programme of talks, demonstrations and shows aimed at both the general public and schools and jointly organised by institutions, organisations and research centres.

The purpose of the initiative, which was founded by researchers themselves and is followed in more than eighty countries, is to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of research into the brain and the causes of nervous system diseases, opening up new possibilities of finding remedies for some that are today incurable.

Activities for schools
March 12-16

Coinciding this year with 2012 Neuroscience Year in Spain, scientists from research centres once more present talks and activities at schools with a view to giving pupils insight into the latest advances with regard to how the brain works.

Coordinated by Mara Dierssen of Barcelona Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona City Council’s Institute of Education presents a programme that features activities of two types, all free of charge, for pupils from 10 to 18 years:

1. Talks at schools: Scientists from various research centres visit schools in  Barcelona to discuss and conduct experiments in neuroscience. The themes of the activities range widely, from learning and intelligence to why mice fall in love and why cows go mad, brain disease, drugs and other addictions...
2. Workshops and visits to research centres: These activities combine introductions to concepts and techniques with laboratory practice, enabling pupils to see for themselves how neuroscientific research is conducted.

Activities can be reserved from February 3 to March 3 on the website of the Schools Activities Programme (PAE): www.bcn.cat/educacio/pae

Places limited
