Picasso Museum of Barcelona

Barcelona City Council

The houses and studios of Pablo Picasso, the Llotja School where he studied, the Quatre Gats bar, his friends’ studios, etc. can be found in the area around the present Ciutat Vella neighbourhood. The details below bring together the artist’s different addresses in Barcelona.

  • 1895
The Ruiz-Picasso family arrive in Barcelona, setting up home at a boarding house at 4 Passeig Isabel II, under the Porxos d'en Xifré, where the restaurant 'Set portes' is presently located. They soon move to a flat in the same block of houses but to the rear, located at 3 Carrer de Cristina, at the corner with Llauder. He starts at the Llotja School of Fine Arts.
  • 1896
The family change residence, moving to 3 Carrer de la Mercè. The young Picasso gets his first studio at 4 Carrer de la Plata shared with Manuel Pallarès and where he paints Science and Charity.
  • 1897
The Quatre Gats opens at 3 Carrer de Montsió. Picasso would design the menu two years later.
  • 1899
He shares a studio with Santiago Cardona in Carrer dels Escudellers Blancs.
  • 1900
He changes studio again to 17 carrer de la Riera de Sant Joan (which disappeared when work on the Via Laietana started in 1907). He shares the studio with Carles Casagemas.
  • 1902
He shares a studio at 10 Carrer Nou de la Rambla (before, Conde del Asalto), with the sculptor Ángel Fernández de Soto and the painter Josep Rocarol.
  • 1903
He returns to the studio at 17 Carrer de la Riera de Sant Joan with Ángel Fernández de Soto.
  • 1904
His last studio in Barcelona at 28 Carrer de Comerç, passed to him by Pau Gargallo. Nonell has a studio in the building at the same time. Picasso uses it until finally going to Paris in April 1904.

Picasso would always keep his ties with Barcelona and return repeatedly. He is known to have stayed in 1906, 1909, 1910, 1913, 1917, 1926, 1933 and 1934. The Museu Picasso in Barcelona is the ultimate expression of his strong links with the city and was set up at the artist's personal wish.
