Blue in Context

Over and above the many influences that have habitually been ascribed to Picasso’s Blue Period, it is important to remember that in strictly chromatic terms the colour has a long tradition in European culture and more specifically among Barcelona painters and writers.

In the circles closest to Picasso, blue enjoyed considerable status thanks to artists like Rusiñol and occupies an important place in his paintings — notably the courtyards, landscapes and portraits — and in his literary output.
