Exhibition room 6. El Greco, Rusiñol
and Picasso

In 1899 Picasso painted a portrait of Rusiñol as a hybrid of the anonymous figure of El Greco’s Gentleman with his Hand on his Breast, a clear acknowledgement of Rusiñol’s role in championing the art of the Cretan master.

Picasso had been exposed to El Greco’s work before then, but his visits to Cau Ferrat gave him direct access to a number of originals as well as to paintings influenced by him, and the presence of El Greco in Picasso’s work can be traced right through to the last years of his life.
