The Picasso museum is once again launching a new collection, in the form of a series of booklets to accompany small-format exhibitions whose focus is an in-depth analysis of a particular work, a group of works or a part of the museum’s documentary resources. The title of the collection — Focus — could hardly be clearer or more appropriate. The subject of this first booklet is Science and Charity, a large canvas which Picasso painted in Barcelona when he was only fifteen. The two texts here offer a fuller understanding of the work: one explains its significance within the artist’s development and helps us to appreciate it in the context of the themes that were in vogue in the official exhibitions of the day, while the other lays bare the secrets of the technical process through the use of advanced technologies, revealing how the picture was made.
