Bibi-la-Purée

(1847? – 1903)

'Bibi-la-Purée', also known by the nickname 'King of Bohemia', was an actor who ended his days as a vagabond and a pilferer and haunted the streets of Montmartre and the Latin Quarter. Bibi’s moist crimson lips, flushed cheeks and the rose in his buttonhole all imply lust and the effect is disturbingly invasive as well as comedic, breaching the normal rules of decorum in portraiture.
