
This year is the 150th since the approval of Ildefons Cerdà’s Plan for the Eixample. The Mercè’09 did not want to overlook this anniversary in this year’s celebrations, in which some of the shows are dedicated to the Catalan folklore researcher Joan Amades, who died 50 years ago, and other events feature Istanbul, the invited city to the main festival of Barcelona’s people. The designer Pati Núñez, responsible for a great many of the city’s graphic icons, from the logo for the Port of Barcelona to the famous Vinçon bags, is the author of the Mercè’09 poster. This image has to summarize visually Barcelona’s Main Festival and this year shows us a huge luminous sign lit up by hundreds of bulbs. As she herself explains, when she was searching for an idea with which to start work, she realised that bulbs light up all kinds of popular festivals and marquees – that festivities demand light. It doesn’t happen too often, but this year the Mercè will not have one festival crier, but two. What’s more, they’re mother and daughter. We are talking about Montserrat Carulla and Vicky Peña, two actresses who are well known to the people of Barcelona from their appearances on television, in films and especially in the theatre.
