The central hall at Fabra i Coats is designed to be a large container for cultural production characterised by a crosscutting, multipurpose approach. The idea is to bring together different functions, users and disciplines to make it an outstanding hive of cultural and creative activity.
The Fabra i Coats industrial site comprises a former 19th-century fabric and thread factory that belonged to the old borough of Sant Andreu del Palomar (9th district). The hall at the Barcelona Art Factory and Centre for Contemporary Art was built between 1910 and 1920 is made out of exposed brick with pillars and English rolled structural girders, as well as two attached towers housing the building’s communication hubs.
Barcelona City Council acquired the former Fabra i Coats factory in December 2005. An open participatory process was held in 2006 and resolved to turn the central hall into a national and international benchmark space. In 2008 it was decided to make it an art factory.
