Fire prevention

Measures for preventing fires in the home

  1. Rooms with gas fires, heaters or cookers should have direct ventilation with the outside; otherwise there is a risk of poisoning or an explosion in the event of a gas leak.
  2. Heaters can start a fire. Keep them away (at least one metre) from inflammable objects, such as settees, curtains, clothes that have been hung to dry, etc.
  3. Candles can also be hazardous. Never leave them burning unattended, especially when you go to bed or leave the house.
  4. Never leave young children at home alone. If you need to leave the house, even for a moment, ask someone (a neighbour, for instance) to look after them.
  5. Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  6. Before leaving the house or when you go to bed, ensure that you have switched off all appliances that may start a fire (heaters, stoves, etc.), blow out all candles and shut off the gas supply valves.
  7. Do not plug in too many appliances to the same multi-point socket and ensure that all electrical fittings are in good order. This will help reduce the risk of fire.
  8. Do not use any appliance that is not in good order (fires, cookers, refrigerators, etc.) and do not adjust or repair appliances unless qualified.
  9. Avoid smoking in bed and dispose of cigarette ends in an appropriate place. Make sure they are properly extinguished.
  10. Do not hesitate to call the fire brigade free on 080.
