Prevention and Civil Protection advice

Firework safety

Rockets

  • Never carry fireworks of any kind in your pocket. If they accidentally go off they may cause serious injury.
  • Firecrackers are not to be thrown at people or animals.
  • Never place your face over lit fireworks as they may cause burns or eye injuries.
  • Launching rockets, hot air balloons or any other object containing fire is strictly prohibited within 500 metres of forest areas.

At home

  • All windows and balconies should be closed in order to prevent stray rockets from entering.
  • Clothes that have been put out to dry on roofs and terraces should be taken indoors to prevent sparks from rockets from starting a fire.
  • Foldable awnings on terraces should be retracted.
  • Firecrackers should not be let off indoors.

Bonfires

  • Bonfires should be more than 15 metres away from houses and cars and should never be placed below electric cables or telephone wires.
  • If a bonfire is arranged in the street it is important to ensure that there is enough room for emergency vehicles to pass. An adequately thick base of earth or sand should be set down to avoid damage to the road surface.
  • Never use catalysts to start bonfires, as the deflagration they cause may lead to nearby people's clothes and hair catching fire.
  • Drums, cans, spray canisters, etc., should not be thrown onto the fire as they may explode.
