Prevention and Civil Protection advice
What to do when faced with industrial hazards
Serious accident during the transport of dangerous substances.
- It should be remembered that in case of an emergency DO NOT GO TO SITE OF ACCIDENT only to observe what has happened.
- If you have to provide assistance at the accident, signal the vehicle’s presence by using the lights and placing warning triangles in front and behind.
- If you can, find out if anyone needs help and note the number on the orange plate on the affected vehicle.
- Keep your distance if nobody needs assistance.
- Don’t smoke.
- If there are injured persons, don’t touch them except if there is an imminent risk of fire.
- Always do as instructed by the authorities.
- Listen to the radio (see dials)
Toxic or inflammable fumes
You must:
- Remain confined.
- Avoid exposure to outside air by closing doors, windows and any passages through which air can enter, including ventilation and air-conditioning systems. The greater the extent to which you are sealed from outside air, the safer you will be.
- Turn on the radio (see frequency section).
- If you have pets outside, allow them in.
- If you are in the street, head for the nearest building.
- If the air is polluted, place a handkerchief, preferably wet, over your face in order to protect yourself.
- Avoid smoking and lighting candles, gas lamps and fires in general. The air may be contaminated with inflammable products which could cause an explosion.
- Do not leave your house until you hear the all-clear or when the authorities confirm that it is safe to do so, even if it seems that the emergency is over.
- Do not go down to basements as there may be a build-up of toxic or inflammable gas.
- Remember that, in these circumstances, vehicles are not safe places to be.
