Described as “Otis Redding fronting the Stooges”, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound is a manically oiled soul machine, with references to garage rock and lyrics far removed from the everyday. The tracks (listen to the album, Beat of Our Own Drum) leave you breathless, but on stage they reveal their entire potential: Brooks is a top-class performer; and his band is quite a show. It’s no accident that they were recently the stars of the musical Passing Strange.
